Come fa il cervello ad imparare la grammatica?

Si comincia ad imparare la lingua madre già da neonati. Ciò avviene in modo del tutto automatico. Non ce ne accorgiamo neanche! Quando impariamo, il nostro cervello deve attivarsi e fare molti sforzi. Ogni giorno ascoltiamo delle cose per la prima volta e riceviamo nuovi impulsi. Il cervello non è in grado di elaborare ogni singolo impulso; deve operare un’economia delle scelte. Dapprima segue le regolarità, ricorda ciò che ascolta più spesso e registra il regolare svolgimento degli eventi. Partendo da questi dati, cominciano a delinearsi le regole grammaticali. I bambini sanno già se una frase è corretta o sbagliata, ma non sanno dire perché. Il loro cervello conosce le regole, anche se non le ha imparate formalmente. Gli adulti imparano le lingue in un altro modo. Conoscono già le strutture della propria lingua e si servono di queste ultime per imparare le regole grammaticali di un’altra lingua. Per apprendere, hanno bisogno di studiare. Quando il cervello impara la grammatica, dispone di un sistema ben definito, fa affidamento, per esempio, su nomi e verbi. Questi dati vengono memorizzati in diverse aree cerebrali, che si attivano quando debbono essere elaborati. Le modalità di apprendimento differiscono a seconda della complessità delle regole. Se le regole sono complesse, diverse aree cerebrali si attivano tutte allo stesso tempo. Tuttavia, non è chiaro come il cervello apprenda la grammatica. Si sa solo che, in teoria, tutte le grammatiche si possono imparare.
